Faster than Dyson thought she could move, she was on her feet and across the room. She pressed herself up against the wall behind the shattered mirror frame as it opened another few inches. She would have cursed herself for not finding and barricading this door too, but then she wouldn’t have a meal walking into the room.

Dyson strained her ears to hear how many there were.

One heartbeat, she thought. It’s slow. It’s too slow. She felt her fangs push free of her gums.

The barrel of a gun peaked around the mirror. A man’s face followed it. There was another sharp intake of breath as he no doubt took in the blood and destruction of the room.

Just as the man started to turn, a second before he would have seen her, she slammed her foot into the back of his knees. A shot rang out as he collapsed. His gun skittered across the floor and before he had time to regain his feet, Dyson was behind him. One hand under his chin, pulling up, the other on his shoulder pressing down. She sunk her teeth into the exposed flesh of his neck.

As soon as the hot blood touch her tongue, she spat it out.

It tasted sour, and sharp, and wrong.

“They dosed you,” Dyson said, pushing the man, rolling away from him, and getting quickly to her feet. “I should have known.”

I should have snapped his neck as soon as he walked in, she thought. And I won’t be able to compel any information out of him.

She looked him over. His uniform told her he was a soldier. The color of his jacket told her what side.

“How did you get in here?” the soldier asked, never taking his eyes off her.
